DNV: A community development project in Lenh, Yen Bai

- Lenh village is located in the poor mountainous district of Van Chan, Yen Bai province, having a population of 265 people. Out of 45 households, 43 are of H’mong ethnic minority group, most are under poverty line.

Many a big "NO"

No clean water, no habit of water bathing, no toilet, no knowledge of hygiene & sanitation, no income other than rice crops which is enough for 3 – 4 months/year, no knowledge of vegetable cultivation or livestock feeding.


 
What has been done?
Water
After 2 months with a lot of effort to overcome the rainy weather and the geography, 45 family latrines and public bathrooms have been completed and put into service since Dec 2010.
Sanitation
However to change H’mong long standing traditions and practices, continuous education and encouragement are required! Van Chan Red Cross staff and volunteers have maintained regular visits to the families at least twice per week to reinforce messages on healthcare and hygiene.
Short term livelihood support
In addition to facility improvement, livelihood sincluding forest plantation, corn and vegetable rearing.Training was also provided by Red Crtechniques and in sanitary manners.

VGP – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Thiện Nhân today in Hà Nội hosted a reception for Mr. Gary Schutz, Co-Chairman of the Việt Nam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD). Deputy Prime Minister said he hoped the Council would realize its action plan on four top priorities including energy, climate change, education, and environment protection by the year end.

Training Workshop on Business and Sustainable Development
