The 2nd meeting on 21st May of the Working Group on Vision 2050

On 21st May 2012 in Hanoi, the working group on Vision 2050 of Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) convened to complete two important reports "Economic Empowerment for Women" and "Green Building" to submit to the Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development ahead of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). At the meeting, the working group also discussed topics of the next reports named "Energy Efficiency and Climate Change" and "Agriculture".
 
The Vision 2050 is a new agenda for business towards sustainable development, initiated by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and 62 countries members of the Council regional networks. In Vietnam, the concretization of Vision 2050 is started by VBCSD with the translation and dissemination of Vision 2050 reports as well as related tools developed by the WBCSD. Then, in March 2012, the Working Group on Vision 2050 had the first meeting and determined that  basic pillars of the WBCSD Vision 2050 such as “Human Values”, “ Human Development”, “Economy”, “Agriculture”,  “Forest”, “Energy and Electricity”, “Building”, “Mobility”, “Materials” will be developed for Vietnam.

 
The 2nd meeting on 21st May of the Working Group took place after two months of proactively building up the draft reports on two important pillars of “Human values” and “Human development”,  There were 12 participants who are representatives from national and international businesses like HiPT, FPT, Dream House, DuPont, KPMG, Novartis, Standard Chartered Bank (Vietnam), TATA Steel, Unilever Vietnam, and Vietnam Holding Asset Management Ltd. In this meeting, there were also representatives of the Vietnam Green Building Council, and centre for Environmental Research, Education and Development.
 
Opening the meeting, Mr. Ashok Sud, Special Advisor, Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank (Vietnam) presented a brief report on "Enhancing Economic Empowerment for Women in Vietnam," and highlighted outstanding  issues for women in the access to resources and social services, leading to  limited participation in economic activities. The participants discussed some specific recommendations on policies to improve the defined issues in short-term as well as in the long-term. In the afternoon session, Mr. Yannick, Executive Director of Vietnam Green Building Council presented a brief "Green Building" report. The participants exchanged views, discussed, supplemented and modified some points to ensure the draft to be scientific, practical, and reflect the needs of business community to make more contributions in the struggle for sustainable development of the country. The Working Group also discussed about the topics of energy, agriculture and agreed the draft agenda of the next reports.

 
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, Director of the Office for Business Sustainable Development, cum General Secretary of the VBCSD emphasized: "The completion of two reports related to Vision 2050 is not only for the Delegation  of the Government  and Business to join the Rio +20 Conference, but also the momentum for the  follow-up activities of the Working Group, help specify the objectives and outline roadmap for Vietnam businesses toward sustainable development of the country”.
