The meeting between VBCSD and DPM Vu Duc Dam

On 10th December 2014, Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) had a meeting with H.E Vu Duc Dam, Deputy Prime Minister cum Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development and Competitiveness Improvement. This meeting is held on a biannual basis, which is an occasion for VBCSD to report its activities, propose recommendations and hear directives from the DPM.
At the meeting, DPM Vu Duc Dam highly rated the activities report, work plan, introduction to the “Action 2020 in Vietnam” project, recommendations on sustainability reporting and corporate sustainability indexes in Vietnam, information about the research on the competitiveness of rubber, tea and coffee industries and plans of the upcoming two projects on productivity enhancement and sustainable agriculture and food security of VBCSD.

The DPM highly appreciated the role and contributions of VBCSD in fostering and promoting the sustainable development of businesses and the whole country in general. He praised recent and future activities of VBCSD as they were closely aligned with the priority areas of the Government. Additionally, the DPM gave VBCSD a number of directives as follows:
1.   VBCSD should focus more on orienting startup companies towards sustainable development as the new companies tend to pursue profit maximization at all costs, even ignoring their adverse impacts to the environment and community.
2.   In order to accelerate the adoption of sustainable development models and practices in the business community, VBCSD should incorporate more sustainable development criteria into the set of assessment criteria of all business awards organized by VBCSD and VCCI.
3.   The Government expects VBCSD support in the development of its resolution on improvement of the productivity, which can be either a separate resolution, or incorporated into the implementation plan of the existing Resolution No. 19/NQ-CP on Competitiveness Enhancement and Improvement of Business Environment.
4.     VBCSD/VCCI is to engage in the development of the Vietnam development Report 2035 and build a website to collect public suggestions for this report.
5.   VBCSD is to work with Ministry of Planning and Investment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advance the participation of the Government of Vietnam in the Group of Friends of Paragraph 47 (GoF47).
(GoF47 is an intergovernmental group composed of 10 States which aims to promote sustainability reporting within intergovernmental discussions as well as to foster a process of continuous learning by its members through the exchange of best practice in order to enhance the effectiveness of sustainability reporting policies and initiatives)
