“Hanoi lakes clean-up day“ event drew more than 1,200 volunteers

Hanoi has more than 120 lakes with a total area of nearly 700 hectares of water surface. The system of lakes in Hanoi plays a very important role. They are not just the green lungs of the capital, but many scenic lakes are also adding value to the historical culture of Hanoi. Unfortunately, many lakes in Hanoi are polluted, causing negative impact on the urban landscape and negatively impact public health.

On the morning of 17^th September 2016, at Thong Nhat Park, Hanoi, the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) under the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in collaboration with the Center for Environment and Community Research (CECR), Bao Viet Holdings, Coca-Cola Vietnam Company, Rep. Office of Dow Chemical Company in Vietnam and Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam co-organized the event: “Hanoi lakes clean-up day”. The event aims to raise public awareness and promoting community efforts in water environment protection in general, recovery and conservation of Hanoi’s lakes in particular.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh – Member of the Standing Committee, Deputy Secretary General of VCCI cum Secretary General of VBCSD said: “The large participation of volunteers coming from businesses, local authority, universities, youth clubs and the elderly at the "Hanoi’s lakes clean-up day" proves that the event was successful in calling for the positive response of and linking various community members in water environment protection activities. VCCI/VBCSD will definitely maintain and expand the scale of this meaningful event in the coming years.”

Speaking at the event, Mr. Truong Manh Tien – Chairman of Hanoi Lakes Club emphasized: "Hanoi lakes are special properties of the city as well as the whole country. We may consider each lake in Hanoi as an important natural heritage of the capital. In recent years, Hanoi Lakes Club and local women's associations have been implementing a number of practical works to help better preserve and improve the landscape of some lakes in Hanoi in the context of climate change. Our Action Programme for Hanoi’s lakes has been well responded by the community and gained some positive results. We hope our work will help spread the message of "Preserving heritage, protecting the future: Joining hands to protect lakes in Hanoi" to every people in the capital, so that we can act together for greener and cleaner Hanoi’s lakes ".

The “Hanoi’s lakes clean-up day” consisted of meaningful activities such as cleaning up the Bay Mau Lake and its surrounding area in Thong Nhat Park, exchanging garbage for baby trees, etc. The event attracted the participation of more than 1,200 volunteers from businesses, NGOs, CSOs, youth clubs and the elderly in Hanoi.
