Participating in WWF's Project on Energy Efficiency for Shrimp Farms

Vietnam has one of the highest energy intensity levels in the world and this situation is threatening the country’s energy security. Vietnam’s fast socio-economic growth and industrialization combined with its high-energy intensity makes the current energy production unsustainable. Moreover, local communities and the environment are negatively affected by large scale hydro power and fossil fuel projects. WWF Vietnam works towards the strengthening of civil society intervention in the energy sector. This includes the development of replicable market-based solutions for clean and renewable energy piloted and promoted by small and medium sized enterprises.

In this context, WWF is targeting shrimp farms in the Mekong delta, where we believe there is big potential to apply and replicate sustainable energy solutions. In the WWF report on Shrimp farm energy auditing done by Artelia Vietnam in Jan 2016 it shows that there potential and feasibility of energy efficiency measures can be applied in shrimp farms in the Mekong Delta. Three 3 highlighted recommendations are included: (i) Improve control of aerators (VSD/BOD demand): BOD measurement only; (ii) Replace the Vietnamese/Taiwanese motor by an efficient one (Second hand motor); and (iii) Install energy efficient paddle wheel.

The requirement for now is the application of recommended solutions at the pilot sites. This leads to WWF bidding process of energy efficiency equipment for the pilot shrimp farms.
