Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, August 06th, 2022 – SCG Chemicals (SCGC) and its subsidiary Long Son Petrochemicals (LSP) - owner of the first integrated petrochemicals complex in Vietnam in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Vung Tau City planted 400 trees in the area of Nui Lon (Vung Tau City), equivalent to 3.26 hectares of forest. This activity not only supports Vung Tau to gear itself toward a green city model, responds to the call for 1 billion trees to be planted nationwide from 2021 to 2025 by the Prime Minister, but also demonstrates the ESG strategy (Environmental, Social, and Governance) that the company is pursuing, in which Net Zero is one of the major commitments.
The impact of climate change and natural disasters has become increasingly complex, affecting all aspects of socio-economic life and environment and threatening the country’s sustainable development. Therefore, planting and protecting forests and developing trees for environmental protection are of vital significance. Since 2021, Vietnam has been rolling out a project to plant 1 billion trees by 2025. On a local scale, many provinces and cities have responded to the project by encouraging people to plant trees at home or through community programs. And for Vung Tau, this project not only increases the density of trees for people in the city but also helps it move to a green city model.
Aligned with sustainable development goals, ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategy, and commitment to support the community where they operate. SCGC and LSP have been initiating many programs to leverage the environment and better life of people in communities around our complex. Recently, SCGC and LSP have collaborated with VTPC to plant 300 trees in a public area in Long Son commune, turning the surrounding environment into green spaces. Moreover, inside the LSP complex, we have conserved 24.3 hectares for a mangrove forest. The plantation of 400 trees (including: 100 poinciana trees, 300 yellow-flamboyant trees) for Vung Tau today is another effort to manifest our sustainability and ESG commitment, toward a Net Zero society.
Mr. Dhep Vongvanich, Advisor to the President & CEO of SCG at the event
Mr. Dhep Vongvanich, Advisor to the President & CEO of SCG said: “In the Kick-off Conference to develop the Vietnam National Action Plan toward Circular Economy late June 2022, SCG and its subsidiaries had shown our strong commitment to work hand-in-hand with the government and the private sector of Vietnam to tackle the emerging issues of waste management, climate change and so on, toward the Net Zero Goal in 2050. For SCGC and LSP, we have actually started our actions a long time ago, as a joint effort with the local community of Ba Ria Vung Tau. From the waste management project at schools and commune in Long Son, to a wider scale project on provincial level, and now we are delighted to work together with Vung Tau city on this plantation project. These actions clearly manifest the corporate continuous commitment to a sustainable future of the locality and Vietnam.”.
Mr. Hoang Vu Thanh, Member of the Executive Committee, Vice secretary, Chairman of Vung Tau People’s Committee said: “As a part of the collaboration between the People's Committee of Vung Tau and SCGC - owner of the integrated petrochemicals complex in Vietnam, we organized the planting of trees across the city. Through this program, we want to spread the green tree planting movement to every individual, household, agency, and business... so that the entire society may join hands and passionately engage in planting trees, planting forests, and raising awareness as well as implement effective strategies to safeguard forests, plants, and our own lives.
