Sustainability has become a core priority for Mondelez Kinh Do, the home of Vietnam's most beloved snack brands, including Kinh Đô, Cosy, AFC, Solite, Oreo, Slide, Cadbury. With a strong commitment to driving positive change for the environment, the community, and its stakeholders, Mondelez Kinh Do has embraced sustainability across four key pillars: Ingredients, Climate, Packaging and Social Responsibility. Recent initiatives in sustainable packaging have showcased the company’s progress toward an eco-friendlier future. By responding to the growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible solutions, Mondelez Kinh Do is leading the way in transforming packaging, ensuring it aligns with their broader sustainability mission.
Driving the paper circular economy
Mondelez Kinh Do’s sustainable packaging strategy emphasizes the paper circular economy, reducing reliance on plastic and promoting the use of recyclable materials, such as paper and cardboard. As paper-based materials, such as boxes and cartons, account for a significant portion of Mondelez Kinh Do’s packaging, the company has made it a priority to shift towards using paper that is easily recyclable and fits into a closed-loop system.
By driving the paper circular economy, Mondelez Kinh Do is reducing waste, reusing materials, and creating packaging that can be continuously cycled back into production. This approach supports both the environment and the economy by lowering resource consumption and minimizing the long-term impact on ecosystems.
A key element of this strategy is the company’s partnership with local packaging collection company as Đồng Tiến and Vĩnh Xuân. Together, they have implemented a comprehensive program to collect, recycle packaging waste and manufacture the paper packaging products, which significantly contributes to community waste reduction efforts. This partnership has already yielded substantial results, with 1,537 tons of packaging collected and recycled in Quarter 3.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, Mondelez Kinh Do advanced its paper circular economy efforts through a partnership with Veca, a tech-driven recycling company. By setting up collection points at some kiosks across Ho Chi Minh City, this initiative resulted in the collection of more than 16 tons of packaging. This not only reduced waste but also heightened consumer awareness of responsible disposal practices.
Mr. Anil Viswanathan, Managing Director of Mondelez Kinh Do Vietnam, shared, “Our focus on sustainability is not just about reducing our environmental footprint, but about creating a lasting positive impact through innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to responsible practices. Our sustainability strategy guides our efforts to contribute to a sustainable future and align with our mission to be a responsible and innovative leader in the industry."
Pioneering sustainability through packaging innovation
Mondelez Kinh Do has been at the forefront of packaging innovation, with 100% of the company’s biscuit packaging now designed using recyclable materials. This includes a major achievement in 2024: all laminate used for mooncake packaging is fully recyclable, and all plastic trays for mooncake products are made from recyclable materials, significantly reducing the environmental impact of these popular seasonal items.
Beyond the Mooncake products offerings, Mondelez Kinh Do is continually working to reduce plastic usage in the packaging of Kinh Do fresh and Biscuits products. This initiative is part of the company’s broader goal to minimize plastic waste across all product categories.
The company has also reduced ink usage in the packaging design of key products like AFC, Solite Nature Fresh, and Oreo Pie. This seemingly small change has a significant impact, reducing unnecessary waste while allowing Mondelez Kinh Do to refine its packaging processes in every way possible. The company has also implemented a reuse program for cardboard boxes during production, further minimizing waste.
