The project, titled "Planting and Restoring 17 Hectares of Special-Use Melaleuca Forest with 340,000 Melaleuca Trees", was implemented in Tân Hưng District, Long An Province, from 2021 to 2024. It was carried out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in collaboration with the Láng Sen Wetland Reserve, with funding support from C.P. Vietnam Corporation in partnership with the PAN Group. The Lang Sen Wetland Reserve is Vietnam’s seventh Ramsar site and the 2,227th in the world. This project aims to restore habitats for water birds and aquatic flora and fauna while raising community awareness about the importance of nature conservation.

MOU between C.P. Vietnam, IUCN and PAN Group
This collaboration is part of C.P. Vietnam Corporation's initiative "C.P. Vietnam - Journey for a Green Vietnam 2021-2025." The initiative aims to plant 1,500,000 trees nationwide, including 500,000 trees within the company's system of factories and farms and 1,000,000 trees through partnerships with provincial authorities and agencies. These efforts significantly contribute to local reforestation campaigns.
The Project's closing ceremony
On November 22, 2024, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in coordination with the Lang Sen Wetland Reserve, organized the project’s closing ceremony to evaluate the environmental impact of the two-year implementation. The event also served as a platform to share experiences, lessons learned, and explore potential opportunities for carbon credits through reforestation. The ceremony was attended by representatives from Long An Province authorities, Tan Hung District, three buffer-zone communes of the reserve, the Provincial Forest Protection Department, the management of the Lang Sen Wetland Reserve, the PAN Group, C.P. Vietnam Corporation, IUCN, forestry and carbon credit experts, as well as various media outlets.
Mr. Truong Thanh Son, Project Manager of the Lang Sen Wetland Reserve
A representative of the Lang Sen Wetland Reserve emphasized that restoring 17 hectares of Melaleuca forest would preserve the unique species and natural landscapes of the Dong Thap Muoi region, while mitigating the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Once restored, the forest will provide a habitat for rare aquatic species, reptiles, and water birds. The reserve also expressed its appreciation for the significant contributions of C.P. Vietnam Corporation and the PAN Group in supporting critical conservation functions.
The Lang Sen Wetland Reserve is one of the few remaining natural inland wetlands in the Mekong Delta, featuring a diverse ecosystem of swamps, grasslands, and Melaleuca forests. Restoring the Melaleuca forest not only helps rehabilitate wetland ecosystems but also aligns with Vietnam's net-zero emissions goal for 2050. This initiative provides a strong foundation for potential carbon credit programs, creating opportunities for businesses like C.P. Vietnam Corporation and the PAN Group to offset their carbon footprints.
The Forest in 2024
Over the two years of implementation, in addition to planting 17 hectares of forest, the project also organized conservation awareness campaigns for over 500 students from schools in the buffer zones. These activities aim to inspire the younger generation and local communities to better understand the value of wetland ecosystems and encourage collective action in protecting the environment.
