Dow Vietnam Launches Hands-on STEM Education Program for Chemistry Students

HANOI, VIETNAM – 21^st March 2017 – In March 2017, Dow Vietnam LLC in collaboration with Chemical Society of Vietnam launch a hands-on Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) education program chemistry students with a view to developing chemical industry future workforce to the next level.

STEM employs a distinct hands-on education model from Dow to empower an innovative-driven workforce in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics that has been Dow’s success in many countries. In Vietnam, the initiative is specifically focused on chemistry with two key pillars:

Educating chemistry students through field trips to arouse their passion for chemistry occupation and offering them an opportunity to access to Vietnam chemical industry. The program includes seven field trips for around 400 of the country’s best chemistry students;
Organizing a specialized workshop to constitute a common forum for chemistry lecturers, chemical manufacturers and managers to share experience on industry workforce training, green chemistry nurturing as well as the sustainable development of Vietnam chemical industry.

We recognize a highly-responsible and well-qualified workforce as a crucial part of a sustainable economy. This belief leads us to bring Dow’s global STEM program from the US to Vietnam. We are devoted to a successful STEM program here as an evidence of our commitment to become Vietnam’s sustainable partner,” said Mr. Tomoyuki Sasama, General Director, Dow Vietnam LLC.

Dow’s very initiative to deploy STEM program in Vietnam is encouraged by its project partner - Vietnam Chemistry Society. “We treasure the STEM program as a highly sensible education project by Dow Vietnam. The project makes sense in helping to lessen the gap between theory and practicality in chemistry workforce training. Particularly, its uttermost goal is aimed at a sustainable industry and to embark on a new workforce of responsible care and focusing on green chemistry,” added Mr. Le Quoc Khanh, Chairman of Chemical Society of Vietnam.

STEM is one of Dow Vietnam’s numerous social programs deployed for community sustainability for the past two decades. Typical programs include sponsoring Dow’s Reverse Osmosis™ water filter systems in line with Ministry of Health’s standards for rural hospitals and schools, building homes for the underprivileged across the country, improving enterprise awareness of sustainable development and a circular economy, scholorships for Vietnamese young talents, and more. Dow Vietnam’s contribution has been recognized by Amcham with the prestigious CSR recognition award for two consecutive years from 2015 to 2016. Apart from social programs, Dow is providing essential inputs to many downstream and supporting industries in Vietnam.
