For World Cleanup Day 2022, a total of 200 Nestlé Vietnam’s staff volunteered to collect waste on a beach in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City. Nearly 1.5 tonnes of rubbish was collected in just half a day.
The beach clean-up activity "For a Blue Ocean" aims to bolster environmental protection and raise awareness by cleaning garbage and mismanaged waste from beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.
Binu Jacob, managing director of Nestlé Vietnam, said, "During 27 years of development, Nestlé has been committed to sustainable development in both the socio-economic field and environmental protection in Vietnam. We have always been determined to pioneer solving waste challenges, including plastic waste."
"Through this programme, every Nestlé employee has a chance to participate in the company's sustainable development. Small actions create a huge positive impact. The efforts not only help with environmental protection but also align with our global vision of a zero-waste future," he added.
After the programme, all waste collected by employees of Nestlé Vietnam was transported to a landfill and processed by the environmental company according to regulations. The programme also included a trip to the Dan Xay tourist area in the Can Gio region, where staff explored and learned about the mangrove ecosystem.
The initiative gives Nestlé employees the chance to participate in environmental protection through specific acts, and promotes awareness and the bond between people and nature.
For World Environment Day on June 5, the environmental ambassadors of Nestlé Vietnam also organised an afforestation activity, "Sowing Green - Nurturing Life." This gave employees the chance to restore the forest and its ecosystem, thereby limiting the negative impact of climate change.
In 2019, Nestlé Vietnam Company teamed up with Phuoc Hai People's Committee to clean up Phuoc Hai Beach and collect nearly 1.1 tonnes of rubbish.
Waste pollution, especially ocean plastic waste, has long been a pressing issue worldwide. Vietnam has a high amount of plastic waste flowing into the sea yearly. Ocean plastic waste is currently threatening ecosystems, human habitats, and species.
Recognising this problem, Nestlé cooperates with agencies and departments to reduce plastic waste on land and in oceans. The company has accompanied the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) in environmental protection activities.
Nestlé Vietnam has led many activities and campaigns, contributing to the reduction of plastic waste and realising the group’s commitment that by 2025, 100 per cent of Nestlé packaging will be recyclable or reusable. This commitment goes hand in hand with Nestlé's vision that "No packaging, including plastic packaging, should be landfilled or become waste."
The company has been awarded the Vietnam Environment Award 2019 by the MoNRE. It has also been named the most sustainable business in Vietnam in the manufacturing sector by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
