The project is a determined initiative by Dong Thap provincial leaders to address the alarming decline in Eastern Sarus Crane populations at Tram Chim National Park in recent years. This decline has coincided with a broader degradation of the park's ecosystem, including the shrinking of Eleocharis grasslands (the cranes’ primary food source) and a reduction in aquatic species diversity and abundance. These changes have disrupted food supplies and habitats for the cranes and other species. Contributing factors include climate change, altered hydrological regimes, and human impacts, which have collectively transformed the park’s ecosystem. Furthermore, intensive agricultural activities in the surrounding areas have exacerbated habitat loss, further threatening the cranes' living environment.
Mr. Phạm Thiện Nghĩa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Đồng Tháp Province, delivered a speech at the announcement ceremony of the project.
Faced with this urgent situation, Đồng Tháp Province has developed and approved the "Sarus Crane Conservation and Development Project at Tràm Chim National Park for the 2022–2032 period." Over the 10 years of implementation, Đồng Tháp aims to raise and release approximately 100 Sarus Cranes, with 50 individuals expected to adapt and thrive in the natural environment.
As the project began, Đồng Tháp Province received significant support and cooperation from various organizations, individuals, and dedicated enterprises, both domestic and international. This assistance included sharing experiences and successful conservation stories, particularly from the Sarus Crane preservation program in Buriram Province, Thailand. C.P. Vietnam Corporation, a company that has been involved with the project since its inception, played a key role by providing both financial and physical resources with the shared goal of "bringing the cranes back" to Đồng Tháp.
As a Thai company with advantages in language, culture, and local knowledge, C.P. Vietnam acted as a bridge between Vietnam and Thailand, facilitating smoother exchanges, resolving challenges, and making significant contributions to improving livelihoods and income generation for communities in the core and buffer zones surrounding Tràm Chim National Park. Additionally, their commitment to wildlife preservation and development, especially for the critically endangered Sarus Crane, has bolstered the overall conservation effort.
Mr. Montri Suwanposri, Vice Chairman of C.P. Vietnam, delivering remarks at the Ceremony
Mr. Montri Suwanposri, Vice Chairman of C.P. Vietnam, emphasized: "For the project’s sustainable development, C.P. Vietnam has undertaken numerous initiatives to promote awareness and educate children, youth, and the community on Sarus Crane conservation, with the goal of jointly protecting the species and the environment. Additionally, community development projects have been implemented to create employment opportunities and generate income for local residents. These efforts are based on the experience of Thailand, with the guiding principle that 'initially, people raise cranes, and later, cranes help people.' This philosophy will not only improve the livelihoods of local communities but also promote unity and prosperity, fostering a spirit of collaboration through the approach of 'working together, sharing together, and achieving happiness together,' in alignment with the principles of the 'Sufficiency Economy.'"
